Geographic location and Climate
Shanghai is located at 31'14" north latitude and 121'29" east longitude, in the west coast of Pacific Ocean and east border of Asia Continent. At the front of Yangtze Delta, bordering on Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province in the west, shanghai is washed by the East Sea in the east and Hangzhou Bay in the south, and the connection of the
Yangtze River and East Sea in the north, where Yangtze River pours into the East Sea.
Shanghai is also assumed to be in the central location of China's arcing north to south coastline. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai has now become an excellent river and seaport, boasting easy accesses to the broad hinterland. The climate of Shanghai is North Asia sub-tropic monsoon with distinct four seasons, sufficient sunshine and plenty of rainfall. It is mild and humid in Shanghai with relatively short spring and autumn and long winter and ummer. In 2003, the average temperature of the whole year was 17.4℃, time of sunshine was 1699.8 hours, volume of rainfall was 931.2mm. Shanghai covers an area of 6340.5 sq. kilometers. The span from north to south is 120 kilometers and that from east to west is 100 kilometers. There are three islands in Shanghai: Chongming Island, Changxing Island and Hengsha Island. Chongming Island is the third largest island in china whose area is 1041.21 sq. kilometers. The total population of Shanghai is increasing continuously. By the end of 2003, the total population is added up to 17.1 1 millions while the local citizen 13.42 millions, increasing by 0.86 million compared with the same period the year before.
