3.2 Traffic Facilities

3.2.1 Present Situation of the Urban Traffic Facilities

Up to the end of 2005, we have 123 km of subways road network in the CBD has been optimized. The 33.5 km middle-ring road has been put into use. 10 tunnels go under the Huang Pu River with a total of 54 lanes. By the end of 2005, there are 940 bus routes with a total route length of 21794 km. The total road surface reached 7580 m2, and the total length was 8110 km, out of which 560 km were express highway. The urban road network has been basically formed. The major national and inter-province highway was 792 km. The highway network density is 128 km. per 100 sq. km.

3.2.2 Layout of Urban Traffic Facilities

Shanghai will build traffic facilities in line with our aim to achieve international economic financial, trade and shipping center and a successful World Expo. Priority will be given to International Shipping Center”, “World Expo”, “New Suburbs”, “Eco City”, and “Security and Safeguard”. Efforts will be make to strengthen the construction of important functional and network-enabled infrastructure and modern infrastructure system. We will give priority to Public transportation development” and form the basic network of railway traffic of over 400 km (See Table 3-2 General Layout of Railway Traffic Network of Shanghai).

During the“10thFive Year”, Shanghai’s manufacturing industry grew up at an average rate of 18.9%, and its added value increased at an average rate of 15.4%. In 2005, the whole city realized

1687.68 billion of total output of manufacturing industry, which keeps a double-digit increase in 16 straight years. The industrial gross product of foreign-invested enterprises recorded 62.2% of the whole city. In 2005, the gross industrial output of Shanghai was 6% of the whole nation, seating the 5th, and the income of the main business was 6.7% of that of the whole nation, and the total amount of profit was 6.5% of the whole nation.

100 km. of lanes will be devoted to public transportation in the city center. The connectivity of different traffic will be improved. The railway and middle ring road will be the main facilities and 73 passenger terminals of convenient transit will be established, so as to shorten the time between any two locations in the city center down to one hour. The highway network will be formed including 200 km of high-speed road and 400 km of main roads, secondary road and connecting roads. Cross-river tunnels and bridges will reach 17 with 94 lanes. The rush hour driving speed of 45 km/hour could be maintained on high-speed roads and 25~30 km/hour in the city center within the inner ring road. Speed lower than 15 km/hour will not exceed 10% of total roads (See Table 3-3 The Layout of Express Highway Network of Shanghai).
