12.1 Yangshan Deepwater Port
|
12.1.1 Brief Information
Yangshan Deepwater Port is the core project of Shanghai international navigation center. As the first port built by China on sea islands, it is located in the area of Qiqu Islands, Shengsi, off the estuaries of Hangzhou Bay and Yangtze River, and composed of dozens of islands like Dayangshan Island and the Xiaoyangshan Island. Yangshan Deepwater Port lies 32 km. southeast of Luchaogang, Nanhui, Shanghai, 90 km. north of Beilun Port of Ninbo, and 45 nautical miles from the international navigation line, and is the a good deepwater port nearest to Shanghai.
Shanghai started the construction of Yangshan Deepwater Port in 2002. On December 10, 2005, the first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port was completed for opening. The first phase included three parts, i.e., the port operation area, Dong Hai Bridge, Luchaogang Supporting Area. (Refer to Sketch 12-1: Sketch Map of Planned Yangshan Deepwater Port) |

(1) The Port Operation Area. Five 70-100 thousand tonnage berths of the first phase have been built and come into operation, and the world newest generation of super-Panamanian containerships may anchor. The dock is 1600 meters long, 18 container bridge cranes have been installed, the annual handling capacity is over three million. TEUs, and the land area is 1.53 sq.km. The completion of the first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port has re-written the history of Shanghai, which did not have over 15 meters deep sea lanes and deepwater wharves, and present world biggest container ships may be received in all weathers for anchorage and operation.
(2) The Dong Hai Bridge. Being the longest sea bridge, it is 32.5 km long, starting from Luchaogang of Nanhui, Shanghai and ending at Xiaochengzishan Island of Qiqu Islands, Shengsi County, Zhejiang Province, and also links the Port Operation Area with the shore. The bridge was designed in accordance with the standards of two-way and six-lane expressway with Width of 31.5 m and standard a driving speed of 80km/h.
(3) Luchao Port Supporting Area, located near the landing point of the East Sea Bridge and relatively independent, mainly performs the function of providing Yangshan Deepwater Port Operation Area with supporting services and includes port inspection area, auxiliary operation area, dangerous goods operation area and comprehensive auxiliary facilities of water supply, electricity supply and telecommunication.
(4) Overall Planning of Yangshan Deepwater Port Operation Area. The second phase of Yangshan project will be completed at the end of 2006. The dock of Yangshan Port will be extended from 1600 m to 3000 m.; the storage area expanded from 0.87 min sq.m. to approx.1.4 min sq.m.; the number of cranes increased to 34 with thirteen 40ft double-lifting bridge cranes. By 2012, the dock will further be extended to over 10 km., the number of berths increased to over 30 with annual capacity of over 15 million TEUs. |

12.1.2 Status of Operation
By May 10, 2006, the wharves of the first phase smoothly had completed in the five months after the port opening landing operations of 31 extra-heavy or large pieces in 15 batches, the heaviest of which was 525 tons, and landed the world biggest shield machine for the Shanghai-Chongming-Jiangsu Tunnel.
During the 150 days operation of Yangshan Deepwater Port from its formal opening on December 10, 2005 to May 10, it berthed 1,195 ships, among which 342 were main line ships. During the five months period, the wharves of the first phase completed the handling of a total of 1.06 min TEUs with average daily handling of over 7,000 TEUs. Among 1.06 million TEUs, 247 thousand TEUs were transferred from ships, accounting for 23.3% of the total handling. The operation of Yangshan Deepwater Port has the following advantages:
(1)Location advantage. Most of the ships calling at Yangshan are over 6000 tonnage big vessels. Shipping companies report that now the demurrage has been greatly shortened and operation cost greatly reduced with free entry and exit and no need to wait for tides and to reduce loads. At the same time, Yangshan Deepwater Port is close to the international sea lane, thus greatly reducing the pilotage cost of shipping companies. Yangshan Deepwater Port Operation Area relies on the perfect service functions and concentration and distribution network of the urban areas of central Shanghai, making it convenient for shipping companies to organize sources of goods and arrange for voyages.
(2) Climate advantage. The climatic conditions of the city from the end of 2005 to early 2006, with continuous fogs and strong cold waves, were obviously worse than the previous year. According to statistics, affected by the climatic conditions, operations in the Port Operation Area were only suspended for a total of 26 hours, the Dong Hai Bridge was closed for only 7 hours, and the Port Operation Area was in operation as normal when two strong cold waves hit Shanghai. In the first half of 2005, the meteorological department again proved after analysis with facts that the minimum operation days of Yangshan was 340 days. This is almost the same as that of neighboring sea areas and ports. |
