10. Shanghai World Expo

10.1 Outlines of Shanghai World Expo

10.1.1 Preparatory Phase Have Started

On December 3, 2003, China won bidding to host World Expo 2010, and Shanghai will be the host city(Referred to as Shanghai Expo). Shanghai Expo will last for 184 days from May 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010, and 200 countries and international organizations are expected to participate in Shanghai Expo, with 70 min. visitors.

On December 1, 2005, The International Exhibition Bureau unanimously adopted and approved the registration report of the Chinese Government on hosting Shanghai Expo at its 138thplenary session. The Chinese Government has completed the final legal procedure for hosting Shanghai Expo, and the preparatory phase for Shanghai Expo has practically started.

10.1.2 The Theme of Shanghai Expo

The theme of Shanghai Expo is “Better City, Better Life”. It is the first time in the history of World Expos to take city life as the theme. During Shanghai Expo period, governments and peoples of various countries will, centering around this theme, fully display the achievements of civilization of cities, exchange experiences in city development, disseminate advanced belief of the city, and further explore brand new modes of living, life and work in the new century, to provide vivid examples for the building of eco-harmonious society and sustainable development of the mankind.

Shanghai will, centering round this theme, combine the hosting of Shanghai Expo with championing excellent cultural tradition of the Chinese nation, inheriting the historical culture of the city and with cultivating city spirit to enhance the comprehensive quality of the citizens and encourage respectful behavior in the city. At the same time, Shanghai will stress the concept of science and technology, ecology, humanities, etc., further broaden the connotation of the theme of “Better City, Better Life”, and further improve the ways of exhibition and display of Shanghai Expo, to make Shanghai Expo a platform of exhibiting economic, scientific and technological achievements, and a platform of cultural and art exchanges and a platform of facilitating international exchanges.

10.1.3 Organization of Shanghai Expo

The central government has especially established the Shanghai Expo Organizing Committee and Executive Committee. The Shanghai Expo Organizing Committee as the leading body of Shanghai Expo is composed of 24 member units of the relevant departments of the central government and the Shanghai Municipal Government with Madam Wu Yi, member of the political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and Vice Premier, as the Chairperson. The Shanghai Expo Executive Committee as the executive unit of Shanghai Expo is composed of 42 member units of the concerned departments of Shanghai with Mr Chen Liangyu, member of the political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and the Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, as the Chairman.

The Shanghai Affairs Coordination, set up on October 30, 2003 is responsible for the preparation, organization, operation and administration of Shanghai Expo, and a team of chief programmers and planners were set up at the same time. The team of chief programmers is responsible for the planning and designing of the Shanghai Expo Park and related aspects while the team of planners is responsible for the practical planning of exhibitions, activities and forums related to Shanghai Expo.
